HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team's quest for a third consecutive Conference USA regular-season championship continues this weekend when they travel to Houston to play league-rival Rice.
Game times for the series include a 6:30 p.m., start for Friday, at 2 p.m., Saturday, and conclude the set with a 1 p.m., first pitch, Sunday, from Reckling Park.
The Golden Eagles (31-15 overall, 18-6 C-USA), which managed to salvage the final game of the Florida Atlantic series last weekend, hold a one-game lead on FAU at the top of the standings with six contests to play.
Southern Miss plays host to UAB next Thursday-Saturday to finish up the regular season. The magic number to clinch the title is six for the Golden Eagles.
The team's sights, though, are currently focused on one of its longest rivals in C-USA play in Rice. The Owls enter the weekend at 21-27 overall and 12-12 in league play under first-year coach Matt Bragga, who led Tennessee Tech to a NCAA Super Regional last season. He replaces long-time coach Wayne Graham, who retired following last season, after leading the Owls for 27 years.
This series dates back to 2006, which was the first year Rice joined C-USA. While the Owls have captured nine of 13 series against the Golden Eagles, Southern Miss has won the last three. In fact, there has only been one series sweep, and that one went to the Owls during the initial C-USA meeting in 2006.
Since the 2013 campaign, each team has won 10 games in the series, which includes one victory for both schools in the league tournament championship game coming during the 2016 and 2017 seasons. Southern Miss won the 2016 showdown at Pete Taylor Park, 3-2, while dropping the title tilt the following year at MGM Park in Biloxi, 5-4.
Junior catcher/designated hitter Bryant Bowen continues to lead the Golden Eagles offensively with a .369 batting average, while sophomore outfielder Gabe Montenegro is next at .324, followed by senior first baseman
Hunter Slater at .321. Senior designated hitter Erick Hoard holds a .309 mark, while freshman third baseman Danny Lynch possesses a .308 average, and both junior second baseman Matt Guidry and junior outfielder Matt Wallner each sit at .306.
Wallner continues to lead the team in home runs this season with 14, and is just one round-tripper shy of tying Jeff Cook for second place in career homers. Cook tallied 50 home runs from 2000-03. The Forest Lake, Minn., product is also only the second Golden Eagle ever to hit double-digit homers in three straight years. Marc Maddox, who leads the school in career home runs, is the other.
The games can be heard on the Southern Miss Sports Network from Learfield IMG College, including the flagship stations of 96.5 FM and 97.7 FM, as well as 104.5 HD2 in the Hattiesburg area. The can also be accessed through Tune In and for free on the Southern Miss Gameday App. A paid webstream is also available through C-USA.TV.
