Southern Miss Softball Completes Series Sweep Against UTSA With 4-1 Win on Sunday

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss softball team (22-16, 8-7 C-USA) completed their first series sweep of the season on Sunday after defeating UTSA (17-21, 6-9 C-USA) by a final score of 4-1.

Sunday's sweep against UTSA marked the first for Southern Miss since March 25, 2018 when they swept UTEP in a C-USA series played in Hattiesburg.

The Golden Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning after Karley Nichols scored on an RBI single by Madison Rayner and Destini Brown scored on a Lacey Sumerlin sacrifice fly to center field.

The score remained 2-0 until the top of the sixth inning when Bailee Baldwin launched a solo home run over the wall in left center to get the Roadrunners on the scoreboard.

Southern Miss immediately answered in the bottom of the sixth inning by tacking on two more runs.

After earning a pinch-hit opportunity in the bottom of the sixth inning, Southern Miss freshman outfielder Kaitlyn Passeau delivered a ringing double to right center that allowed Tata Davis to score, producing the first of the Golden Eagles' two runs scored in the inning.

"My first thought was … see ball, hit ball and that is exactly what I did."

Karley Nichols who has been one of the most reliable bats in the Golden Eagles' lineup since returning from an injury earlier in the year, produced a clutch squeeze bunt single later in the sixth inning that scored Caroline Casey.

"Throughout the week, we really focused in on what to expect from UTSA. I really think that the preparation brought us into this weekend confident and ready to fight for three wins. I would say that our hard work really paid off."

In addition to the offense, junior right-handed pitcher Abby Trahan gave the Golden Eagles another brilliant performance in the circle on Sunday afternoon.

Trahan pitched a complete game in which she allowed three hits, one run (earned), did not issue any walks and struck out seven. The right-hander also collected her 11^th win of the season.

Before Baldwin's sixth inning home run, Trahan had tossed a remarkable 26 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings over the course of her last five outings.

Freshman outfielder Kaitlyn Passeau's sixth inning double marked the first of the Lucedale, Miss. native's Southern Miss career.

Southern Miss will be back in action at the Southern Miss Softball Complex on Wednesday, April 10 when they host in-state SWAC opponent Mississippi Valley State in a single-game midweek matchup. The first pitch of Wednesday night's contest between the Golden Eagles and the Devilettes is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. (CT).
