HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss Golden Eagles (23-16) defeated the Mississippi Valley State Devilettes (4-29) by a final score of 4-2 on Wednesday night at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
Â
With their Wednesday night victory against Mississippi Valley State, the Golden Eagles extended their winning streak to six games.
Â
Southern Miss gained an early 1-0 lead after Lacey Sumerlin lifted a sacrifice fly to right field in the bottom of the first inning that scored Destini Brown.
Â
In the bottom of the second inning, the Golden Eagles extended their lead to 3-0 after Caroline Casey scored on a Mississippi Valley State error and Samantha Papp scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Karley Nichols.
Â
The score remained 2-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning when Heather Hill roped an RBI single through the left side that allowed Sumerlin to cross the plate.
Â
Hill, who has made multiple starts over the course of the 2019 season as the Golden Eagles' designated player, made her first of the season at second base on Wednesday night, and she delivered.
Â
The redshirt sophomore went 2-for-2 in the contest with an RBI and she was the only Golden Eagle to register a multi-hit game.
Â
Hill on her approach at the plate in Wednesday night's contest
"I have been working on my swing and mental approach at the plate, so I tried to focus on hitting good pitches and being on time with the pitcher."
Â
Down to their final three outs, the Devilettes rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh inning courtesy of a Jade Arroyo two-run single to left field.
Â
In the circle, freshman right-handed pitcher Kaylan Ladner dealt for the Golden Eagles. The former Hancock High School standout tossed 6.1 innings in which she scattered six hits, allowed two runs (earned), issued one walk and struck out seven batters, tying her career-high for strikeouts in a single game. The freshman also earned her fourth win of the season.
Â
Ladner on her mentality in the circle against Mississippi Valley State
"When the season is so near the end, dominate is the go to mentality. Before the game, I thought about the journey it took to get here, the amount of hard work that I have put in and how deserving this team is of success. Tonight's midweek game was another opportunity to prepare for our weekend series against UAB."
Â
Another freshman from the Southern Miss pitching staff also had success in the circle on Wednesday night against Mississippi Valley State.
Â
Makenna Pierce who entered the game in relief of Ladner in the top of the seventh inning, helped seal the deal for the Golden Eagles as she tossed two-thirds of an inning and slammed the door on the Devilettes rally. The Daphne, Ala. native was also credited with the first save of her Southern Miss career.
