FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Nine tournaments down, one big one on tap for the Southern Miss women's golf team as it prepares for the three-day Conference USA Championships.
The action will take place at the par-72, 6,194-yard Verandah Club, the fifth-straight year it has been held there. Live scoring will be available at GolfStat.com, with Southern Miss teeing off at Monday at 7 a.m. CT. Golden Eagles competing in the tournament are Cassidy Evreniadis, Friend Chompitakdacha, Miranda Holt, Henriette Syr and Valentina Haupt.
This event also marks the 13th time Haupt will have played in her home state. She recently added to her extensive student-athlete resume by earning Conference USA All-Academic team, Southern Miss Who's Who and Sport Management program leadership recognition this week.
Chompitakdacha, the team's lone freshman, qualified for every tournament since her arrival this January and has carded a par-round in each of her last two outings. Holt, a senior, will look to extend her career. At one point this season, she had improved her score each time over a four-event stretch.
The Golden Eagles are making their third trip to Florida this year, previously finishing fourth at the FIU Pat Bradley in October and 12th at the UNF Collegiate in March. Southern Miss' best-ever finish at the Conference USA Championship was third in 2016. Kelly Erasmus (220), Haupt (222) and Syr (226) all finished between No. 6 and 10 in the standings. It was a then-career-low for the freshman Haupt. Syr also finished tied for second in 2017 with a 1-under 215, which still ties for her best score in 24 career events (Spring 2017 Kiawah Island Invitational).
Past C-USA title winners include UTSA (2018), Old Dominion (2017) and Middle Tennessee (2016 and 2015). Each of those last three champions were 10-12 strokes over par, while the 2015 Blue Raiders were 7-under.
Success on stages like these are not limited to those swinging the clubs this week. Southern Miss first-year head coach Lucy Nunn was the associate head coach on Houston's 2016 and 2018 American Athletic Conference Championship squads.
