BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southern Miss Golden Eagles (26-16, 11-7 C-USA) defeated the UAB Blazers (15-26, 5-12 C-USA) by a final score of 4-0 on Sunday afternoon in the series finale at Mary Bowers Field in Birmingham, Ala.
With the win on Sunday, Southern Miss extended its winning streak to nine games and also notched its second series sweep of the season.
The Golden Eagles' bats came to life early in the contest. Lacey Sumerlin who has been an RBI producing machine for the Golden Eagles this season, ripped an RBI double to right field in the top of the first inning that scored Destini Brown, giving Southern Miss a 1-0 lead.
Southern Miss collected two insurance runs in the top of the second inning when Sarah Van Schaik and Karley Nichols both scored on a fielding error by UAB second baseman Ashton Clem.
In the top of the third inning, Van Schaik produced the fourth run of the game for Southern Miss after blasting an RBI single up the middle that allowed Madison Rayner to cross the plate.
Like she has done so many times this season, junior right-handed pitcher Abby Trahan gave the Golden Eagles a top-notch performance in the circle on Sunday afternoon. The Southern Miss ace dealt her second complete-game shutout of the series and collected her 13th win of the season. In 7.0 innings pitched, Trahan scattered five hits, did not issue a walk and struck out four.
Over the course of her two complete-game performances in the series against UAB, Trahan notched nine strikeouts and did not walk a single batter.
Trahan on Southern Miss' sweep against UAB and her mentality in the circle
"This weekend was another big weekend for us. We stepped up in all aspects and got three huge team wins. In the circle, I continue to throw my game with confidence and trust in my defense behind me."
