HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss softball team (18-16, 5-7) shut out Marshall (23-12, 6-3), 5-0 in the series finale at the Southern Miss Softball Complex on Sunday afternoon in Hattiesburg.
After falling to Marshall in both games of Saturday's doubleheader, Southern Miss bounced back and changed the series narrative on Sunday.
The Golden Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning courtesy of redshirt sophomore Amber Pack who earned the start as the designated player.
With runners on the corners and two outs in the inning, the Brandon, Miss. native fulfilled her role as the designated player and delivered a bases-clearing two-run two-out double to deep left field.
The score remained 2-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning when Sarah Van Schaik produced a ground out to second base that allowed Caroline Casey to score, extending the Golden Eagles' lead, 3-0.
Southern Miss finished off the scoring for the day just one at-bat later when Samantha Papp reached base safely on a Marshall fielding error that also allowed Tata Davis and Brown (unearned) to score.
To go along with their five runs scored in the contest, junior right-handed pitcher Abby Trahan gave the Golden Eagles a phenomenal outing in the circle.
Trahan went the distance, tossing a complete game one-hit shutout in which she tallied eight strikeouts and did not issue any walks.
Trahan (8-8) earned the win while Marshall starter Abigail Tolbert (15-10) suffered the loss.
