MOBILE, Ala. – The Southern Miss Golden Eagles (19-16, 5-7 C-USA) shutout the South Alabama Jaguars (12-21, 2-10 Sun Belt), 2-0 at Jaguar Field in Mobile, Ala. on Wednesday night.
With their win on Wednesday night, the Golden Eagles avenged a loss to the Jaguars from earlier in the season which occurred on March 19 in Hattiesburg.
The Golden Eagles wasted no time as they captured an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning courtesy of a two-run double to left field by Destini Brown that scored Lacey Sumerlin and Tata Davis.
Brown's first inning double proved to be the only hit that manufactured any runs for either team in the contest.
Junior right-handed pitcher Abby Trahan drew the start for the Golden Eagles in the circle and tossed a gem.
Trahan went the distance and notched her second complete-game shutout in just four days. The crafty right-hander scattered six hits, issued three walks, struck out five and collected her ninth win of the season.
Trahan on her performance in the circle and the Golden Eagles' win
"I felt really good in the circle tonight and I felt very confidence in the defense behind me. The runs that my hitters were able to put up definitely made my job easier, too."
Wednesday's trip to Mobile was a bit more special for one Golden Eagle in particular. Southern Miss junior shortstop and Mobile, Ala. native Lacey Sumerlin made her first appearance on the diamond in her hometown since her senior season at Baker High School in 2015.
The former Alabama Gatorade Player of the Year, Miss Softball (Alabama) and Mobile County Player of the Year received a warm welcome in her hometown on Wednesday night and she did not disappoint.
In each trip to the plate, the local legend received the loudest cheers from the Mobile faithful of any player from either team. Sumerlin finished the night by going 1-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and a walk.
Sumerlin on returning to Mobile and Southern Miss' win over South Alabama
"I never thought that I would get another chance to play in my hometown. I had so many people come out tonight to support me and it meant so much. As a team, we accomplished our ultimate goal – win. It was the icing on the cake that we got to do that in front of my hometown crowd!"
