
Southern Miss Softball Falls to Marshall in Saturday Doubleheader

The Thundering Herd took a 6-1 decision in game one and a 6-3 decision in game two.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss Golden Eagles (17-16, 4-7) dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader at the Southern Miss Softball Complex to the Marshall Thundering Herd (23-11, 6-2).

Marshall won game one by a final score of 6-1 and game two by a final score of 6-3.

The Thundering Herd got off to a fast start in game one, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Aly Marshall scored the first run of the game via a ground out by Aly Harrell that allowed Blakely Burch to cross the plate.

The score remained 1-0 until the top of the fifth inning when Briana Daiss sent a three-run pinch hit home run over the center field fence, extending Marshall's lead, 4-0.

The Thundering Herd collected an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning after Burch tripled down the right field line, scoring Hayden Ellis.
Â
Southern Miss got on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning courtesy of a Madison Rayner RBI single to left field that scored Karley Nichols.

Marshall notched their sixth and final run of the game in the top of the seventh inning after Daiss hit a solo home run, marking her second home run of the game.
Â
Marshall starting pitcher Abigail Tolbert (14-9) earned the win while Southern Miss starter Abby Trahan (7-8) suffered the loss.

Southern Miss had a much better start in game two as they held a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning thanks to back-to-back RBI singles by Destini Brown and Samantha Papp.

Marshall answered in the top of the fifth inning, tying the game 2-2 on a Southern Miss throwing error that allowed Sierra Huerta and Samantha Loose to both score.

The Thundering Herd took a 3-2 lead later in the top of the fifth inning when Hannah Giammarino scored on a ground out by Katie Adams.

The Golden Eagles evened the score, 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning after Brown drew a bases-loaded walk, plating Nelson.

Marshall regained the lead in the top of the sixth inning on a solo home run by Harrell and never looked back.

The Thundering Herd tacked on two additional runs in the top of the seventh inning, the first on a solo home run to center field by Huerta and the second on a sacrifice fly from Burch that scored Giammarino.

Tolbert who entered the game in relief for Marshall in the bottom of the fifth inning picked up her second win of the day, improving her record to 15-9. Southern Miss relief pitcher Bailie Springfield (5-2) was tabbed with the loss.

Southern Miss and Marshall will conclude the series with a single-game series finale on Sunday, March 31 at 12:00 p.m. (CT) at the Southern Miss Softball Complex in Hattiesburg.
