
Southern Miss Softball Takes Down UTEP, 13-2 in Sunday Rubber Match

El Paso, Texas – The Southern Miss Golden Eagles (17-14, 4-5 C-USA) defeated the UTEP Miners (9-22, 3-6 C-USA) by a final score of 13-2 in five innings on Sunday afternoon in the series finale in El Paso, Texas, capturing their first C-USA series victory of the season.

Lacey Sumerlin put the Golden Eagles on top 1-0 in the top of the first inning after lacing an RBI double to left center that allowed Chase Nelson to score from second base. Nelson led off the game with an infield single.

Sophomore third baseman Tata Davis who has been one of the hottest hitters in the Golden Eagles lineup as of late, extended the Southern Miss lead, 3-0 after smashing an RBI double to right center, scoring Destini Brown and Sumerlin.

In the top of the second inning, Sumerlin and Sarah Van Schaik drew back-to-back bases loaded walks, tacking on two additional runs for Southern Miss.

Davis then broke the game open with the second grand slam of her Southern Miss career, making the score 9-0 in favor of the Golden Eagles. Davis second inning grand slam also marked her second of the series.

Leading 9-0 entering the top of the third inning, Southern Miss collected three insurance runs courtesy of an RBI double by Sumerlin that scored Brown, and a two-run home run from the bat of Davis that made the score 12-0.

UTEP got on the board in the bottom of the third inning via a Southern Miss fielding error that allowed Lindsey Sokoloski to score, and a single to left center by Kasey Flores that scored Ariel Blair.

Southern Miss notched their final run of the game in the top of the fifth inning when Davis led off the inning with a triple to left field and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Madison Rayner.

"My mind was clear. I wasn't thinking about doing too much, but I was thinking score these runners that are on base. The overall team performance was great. We came out with a dominate mindset, and we were not taking anything other than a W today."

Southern Miss starting pitcher Abby Trahan gave the Golden Eagles another outstanding performance in the circle in what was her second start of the weekend.

Trahan tossed a complete game (five innings), scattered eight hits, allowed two runs (both earned), struck out four and did not issue any walks. The junior right-hander also collected her seventh win of the season.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Saturday, March 30 when they host C-USA foe Marshall.
