HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss Golden Eagles (14-12, 1-4) dropped Saturday's C-USA doubleheader to Florida Atlantic (14-12, 2-0).
The Golden Eagles were defeated by the Owls in game one by a final score of 3-1 and in game two by a final score of 5-3.
Mia Olson gave the Owls an early 2-0 lead when she sent a two-run home run well over the left field wall in the top of the first inning.
The score remained 2-0 in favor of the Owls until the bottom of the sixth inning when Southern Miss' Lacey Sumerlin lifted a sacrifice fly to left field that allowed Destini Brown to score, cutting the scoring deficit to one run.
Florida Atlantic added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning, extending their lead 3-1, courtesy of an RBI single to left field by Carolyn Rosa.
The Owls held on to their lead in the bottom half of the seventh inning and went on to claim a game one victory.
Southern Miss got off to a much better start in game two as they jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a sacrifice fly to left field from the bat of Sarah Van Schaik that scored Chase Nelson.
The Golden Eagles extended their lead, 2-0 after Brown scored on fly ball to right field that marked Sumerlin's second sacrifice fly of the day.
Refusing to go quietly, the Owls began to chip away at the Golden Eagles lead beginning with a solo home run from Olson in the top of the fourth inning to get Florida Atlantic on the scoreboard.
Southern Miss answered in the bottom of the fourth inning when Brown drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring Samantha Papp.
Clinging to a 3-1 lead entering the top of the sixth inning, the Golden Eagles surrendered three runs in the inning, allowing the Owls to take a 4-3 lead.
Florida Atlantic tied the game on back-to-back singles from Jolie Duffner and Lauren Whitt and then took the lead when Duffner scored on a Southern Miss fielding error two batters later.
The Owls added an insurance run to their lead in the top of the seventh inning via a bunt single by Samantha Lageyre.
The Golden Eagles got two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh inning as both Van Schaik and Sumerlin drew one-out walks, but could not complete the comeback.
Southern Miss will look to avenge Saturday's doubleheader loss when they take on Florida Atlantic in the series finale at the Southern Miss Softball Complex on Sunday, March 17.
