RUSTON, La. – Southern Miss, back-to-back Conference USA baseball regular season champions, begins its quest for a third-straight title when they open league play with a three-game series against Louisiana Tech at J.C. Love Field this weekend.
Game times are set for 6 p.m. for Friday, 2 p.m., on Saturday, and at 1 p.m., for the finale on Sunday.
The Golden Eagles own 48 C-USA wins over the last two seasons, which are the most by any program over a two-year span in the history of the league. Southern Miss is the fourth different school – the others were Tulane (97-98), Houston (99-00) and Rice (06-08, 10-15) – to win the league regular-season crown in consecutive seasons.
Southern Miss captured the 2018 Conference USA regular season and tournament tiles, winning the league race by 2 1/2 games and then collected the tournament title for the second time in three seasons. It was the second time Southern Miss won both C-USA championships in the same season with the other time coming in 2003.
Southern Miss won nine of 10 C-USA series last season, including five sweeps to capture 20 or more league games for the third-straight year and the sixth time overall. It also marked the fifth time that it has achieved the regular-season title as well as its fourth tournament crown. Four of the five regular season titles have come under current head coach Scott Berry, while he has led Southern Miss to three of their four tournament titles.
After dropping a 6-5, 12-inning affair Wednesday at Louisiana-Lafayette which snapped a four-game winning streak, Southern Miss (8-6) looks to return to winning ways against a tough foe to open league play in the Bulldogs (11-5).
Louisiana Tech was the only league squad to defeat the Golden Eagles in a series last season, winning two of three games in Hattiesburg.
The Golden Eagles will utilize their same starting rotation as they did last weekend with right-handed hurler Walker Powell (1-0, 0.96 ERA) getting the nod on Friday, with left-handers Stevie Powers (2-2, 4.85 ERA) and Adam Jackson (0-0, 0.79) set to go in the final two contests, respectively.
All three games can be heard on an affiliate on the Southern Miss Sports Network from Learfield IMG College as well through the Southern Miss Gameday app. A paid webstream is also available through C-USA.tv.
