USM closes out the season in Frisco.
FRISCO, Texas – The Lady Eagles closed out their 2018-19 season on Wednesday, falling just short to North Texas in Round 1 of the C-USA Championships, 49-46 at the Star.
Southern Miss finishes its season 17-13 overall and 9-7 in conference play, 9-8 including postseason conference play.
Both Southern Miss and North Texas had a not-so-great first quarter, both only putting up six points. The Mean Green found their stride in the second quarter, putting up 20 points to the Lady Eagles' eight. Southern Miss came into its own come third quarter, putting up 21 to their 10. In the fourth, the Lady Eagles started out just three points behind, then cut the lead to one on multiple occasions. By that point, both teams were wildly determined and neither were going down without a fight. Back to back fouls put many of the second half of the quarter's points on the free throw line, and in the end, the Lady Eagles just couldn't put three more on the board. Shonte Hailes went down and came out of the game, Allie Kennedy taking her spot at the free throw line. Kennedy collected one of the two, putting the Lady Eagles back within one. Shots weren't dropping from the field, and another foul put the Mean Green back at the line to seal the deal.
Respect Leaphart was an absolute force for the Lady Eagles, finishing with 13 boards and four steals. Shonte Hailes was the difference maker from the field, putting up 16 points, three assists, two blocks and two steals. Alarie Mayze put in work as well with 10 points of her own. Daishai Almond tied Hailes' assists with three.
The Lady Eagles finished their season in fighting fashion with a passionate bout against the North Texas Mean Green.
