Southern Miss Softball Shuts Out Alabama State, 5-0 in Montgomery

The Golden Eagles have now recorded four shutouts on the season.
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Southern Miss Golden Eagles (14-10) shutout Alabama State (9-10) in Montgomery, Ala. on Wednesday night.
Southern Miss shortstop and Mobile, Ala. native Lacey Sumerlin had a big night at the plate in her home state on Wednesday.
Sumerlin put the Golden Eagles on top, 3-0 in the top of the third inning after smashing a three-run home run deep over the left field wall.
The third inning home run also marked the third of the season for the junior.
Heather Hill added the fourth run of the game to the scoreboard for the Golden Eagles after reaching base safely on an infield single that scored Tata Davis.
Southern Miss' fifth and final run of the game came in the top of the sixth inning when Madison Rayner drilled an RBI double to score Sarah Van Schaik.
Much like Tuesday night, the Golden Eagles benefited from quality starting pitching in Wednesday night's contest, courtesy of junior right-hander Abby Trahan.
Trahan tossed a total of six innings in the game without allowing a run, picking up her fourth win of the season.
Southern Miss will now focus their attention on their upcoming C-USA series against Florida Atlantic. The Golden Eagles and the Owls will square off in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 16 beginning at 1:00 p.m. (CT). Game two will follow shortly after the conclusion of game one.
The two teams will meet again in a single game series finale on Sunday, March 17 at 1:00 p.m. (CT). The series will be played at the Southern Miss Softball Complex in Hattiesburg, Miss.
