The Golden Eagles took a 7-0 decision in game one and a 7-2 decision in game two.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss Golden Eagles (13-10, 1-2) defeated the Alcorn State Braves (2-10) by final scores of 7-0 and 7-2 in Tuesday's doubleheader at the Southern Miss Softball Complex in Hattiesburg.
Game one started off a bit slow as neither team managed to put a run on the scoreboard in the first two innings of play.
The Southern Miss bats caught fire in the bottom of the third inning though, exploding for four runs in the inning.
Southern Miss senior first baseman Sarah Van Schaik who currently leads the team in doubles with 11 total on the year, drilled a two-run double to right center to put the Golden Eagles on top, 2-0. Samantha Papp and Chase Nelson both scored on the double by Van Schaik.
Van Schaik scored one batter later when Lacey Sumerlin flew out to center field and an error was committed by the Alcorn State third baseman.
Tata Davis who had a spectacular night at the plate for the Golden Eagles capped off the scoring in the inning with a RBI double to right center, plating Madison Rayner.
Southern Miss added a pair of runs to their total in the bottom of the fifth inning courtesy of solo home runs from Van Schaik and Davis.
Van Schaik finished off the scoring in the bottom of the seventh inning sending an RBI single up the middle that allowed Nelson to score. The Petal, Miss. native ended the game just a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.
To go along with their high-scoring offense, true freshman pitcher Kaylan Ladner gave the Golden Eagles a phenomenal start in the circle.
The former Hancock High School (Kiln, Miss.) standout went the distance in the circle and allowed just two hits, issued two walks and struck out a season-high seven batters en route to earning her third win of the season.
Ladner's Tuesday outing also marked the first complete-game shutout of her Southern Miss career.

"From the moment that I was told that I got the start, I knew I wanted to bounce back tonight and completely dominate since my last outing at North Texas. The defense and offense continues to shine through, so I wanted to have their backs and fulfill my job tonight as well. My very first shutout will always be memorable to me because I had the opportunity to play against some familiar hometown faces from the coast and complete it with my teammates around me."
Southern Miss didn't waste any time in game two as they jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after Lacey Sumerlin stroked an RBI double to right center, scoring Van Schaik.
Freshman outfielder Caroline Casey, who earned the start in right field in game two, extended the Golden Eagles lead, 2-0 when she slapped a line drive RBI single to center field, allowing Davis to cross the plate.
It was the first RBI of the Hernando, Miss. native's Southern Miss career.
The Golden Eagles tacked on three insurance runs in the bottom of the third inning thanks to an inside-the-park home run by Davis.
Southern Miss' final runs of the night came in the bottom of the sixth inning when Nelson sent a sacrifice fly to left field that allowed Bailie Springfield to score.
Destini Brown followed Nelson with a sacrifice fly to center field which allowed Casey to score.
To prevent being shutout in back-to-back games, Alcorn State created a seventh inning rally that resulted in two runs scored.
Sandrea Hord got the Braves on the scoreboard for the first time on Tuesday after sending an RBI double to left field that scored Alexsis Ramirez.
Alcorn State picked up their second run of the day when Desirea Lindsey batted an RBI single to center field, allowing Malea Dickerson to score.
Southern Miss got another nice start in the circle, this time from Springfield who also tossed a complete game in which she allowed just three hits, two runs (both earned), issued four walks and struck out a season-high eight batters.
In addition, the junior right-hander also earned her fifth win of the season, improving her record to 5-0.
Southern Miss will enjoy tonight's doubleheader victory before traveling to Montgomery, Ala. to take on Alabama State tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m. (CT). The game will take place at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex on the campus of Alabama State.
