Southern Miss Softball Scheduled to Take on Alcorn State and Alabama State in Midweek Matchups

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss Golden Eagles (11-10, 1-2) will play three midweek games this week, beginning with a home doubleheader against in-state SWAC opponent Alcorn State (2-8) on Tuesday, March 12. The first pitch of game one between the Golden Eagles and the Braves is set for 4:00 p.m. (CT). Game two will follow shortly after the conclusion of game one.

Southern Miss will also square off against Alabama State (9-9) in Montgomery, Ala. on Wednesday, March 13 at 6:00 p.m. (CT).

The last time on the diamond
The last time that Southern Miss took the field, they came away with a 7-3 victory over North Texas on Sunday afternoon. Sunday's win marked the first C-USA win of the 2019 season for the Golden Eagles.

The Golden Eagles' bats caught fire in the series finale. As a team, Southern Miss posted a .333 batting average in the game along with seven RBIs, two doubles, two home runs, four walks and three stolen bases.

Southern Miss junior pitcher Abby Trahan went the distance in the circle, earning her third win of the season. The right-hander allowed just five hits, three runs (none earned), issued two walks and struck out seven.

Noteworthy moments
Southern Miss freshman right fielder Kaitlyn Passeau notched the first home run of her collegiate career in game one of the series on Saturday.

With one out in the top of the sixth inning, the former George County High School (Lucedale, Miss.) standout smashed a solo home run over the left field wall, pulling the Golden Eagles within two runs of the Mean Green.

Breaking down the all-time records
Southern Miss leads the all-time series against Alcorn State, 17-1. The Golden Eagles are 13-1 when facing the Braves in Hattiesburg, 2-0 in road games and 2-0 in neutral site matchups.

Southern Miss holds an unblemished 7-0 all-time record against Alabama State. The Golden Eagles are a perfect 6-0 when hosting the Braves at home and 1-0 in road contests.

The last meetings
The last time that Southern Miss and Alcorn State met was March 13, 2018 in a doubleheader in Hattiesburg. The Golden Eagles took game one, 5-3 and game two, 18-0.

The last meeting between Southern Miss and Alabama State occurred on February 21, 2018 at the Southern Miss Softball Complex. The Golden Eagles won the game by a final score of 8-0.

The opponents
Alcorn State is led by fifth-year head coach Josef Rankin. Alcorn State was last scheduled to play against Texas A&M-Texarkana on Saturday, March 2 but the game was cancelled.

Alabama State is currently under the direction of Chris Steiner-Wilcoxson who is her fifth season as the head coach of the university's softball program.
