Brian Richards Leads Golden Eagles after Opening Day at Border Olympics

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss sophomore Brian Richards (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) collected rounds of 70 and 71 Monday to lead the Golden Eagles men's golf team in a 12th-place tie following the first day of the Border Olympics being played at the Laredo Country Club in Laredo, Texas.
Richards shot a three-under par 141 to post his sixth and seventh rounds of par or below golf this season. He tied for sixth over the first 36 holes with a minus-5 on par 5 holes.
Junior Walker Kesterson (Hartsburg, Mo.) recorded the only other round of par for Southern Miss on Monday at the par 72, 7,204-yard course by posting an even 72 to go along with a 75 to hold a 61st-place tie with a 147.
Junior Matt Lorenz (Gulf Shores, Ala.) and senior Nathan Corchis (Water Sound, Fla.) each posted two-round totals of 153 to be tied for 82nd place. Lorenz shot 76 and 77, while Corchis added rounds of 77 and 76.
Freshman Joey Kirkland (West Monroe, La.) added rounds of 76 and 78 to post a 154 and an 86th-place tie.
The Golden Eagles fired team rounds of 294 and 299 to post a 593 total score and hold down 16th place in the event.
