HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team continues its current eight-game homestand with another NCAA Tournament team from a season ago when they entertain Gonzaga for a three-game weekend series at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field this weekend.
Single games with the Bulldogs are set for 6 p.m., Friday, 2 p.m., Saturday and 1 p.m., on Sunday. This will be the first meeting between the schools in baseball.
The Bulldogs enter Hattiesburg starting the season at 2-6, but have played against an extremely challenging schedule on the road during the early going. Gonzaga, from Spokane, Wash., does not open at home until March 14.
Last season, Gonzaga finished 33-24 overall and second in the West Coast Conference with a 16-11 mark that saw them reach the NCAA Minneapolis Regional. The Bulldogs are the third team the Golden Eagles (4-3) have faced to start the campaign that reached the postseason a year ago.
Southern Miss looks to snap a three-game losing streak, its longest streak since dropping that many games over the final weekend of the 2016 regular season when they were swept at FIU. Since then, the Golden Eagles have lost back-to-back games on six times before this current streak. Coach Scott Berry's club lost its last time out Tuesday, 2-1, at home against New Orleans.
Senior Hunter Slater (Mobile, Ala.) leads the Golden Eagles in hitting through the first seven games, having posting a .393 batting average with a homer and five RBI. Gabe Montenegro (Guatemala City, Guatemala), who had two hits against UNO on Tuesday, also is above the .300 plateau with a .321 mark.
While the Golden Eagle starting rotation has managed just two quality starts to open the season – three earned runs or less with six or more innings pitched – the Golden Eagle relief corps has limited opponents to a 1.63 earned run average and a .207 opposing batting average while registering a 3-1 mark during the early going.
Following the weekend series, the Golden Eagles continue its homestand Tuesday, Mar. 5, when they take on Southern for a 6 p.m., contest.
