HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's golf team is ready to hit the links again Monday as it competes in the ICON Invitational in The Woodlands, Texas. There will be 36 holes on Monday and one more round on Tuesday, both with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
The action will take place at The Woodlands Country Club, a par-72, 6,392-yard course. Fans can follow along via Golfstat.com. Southern Miss began its 2017 fall season in the same city, but just a couple of miles away, with tremendous success in the Jim West Intercollegiate at the Fazio Course. The team's 292 was its then-fourth-best round, and Julie Baker carded a 71 in her first collegiate round.
"The first event has felt like it's been a long time coming," head coach Lucy Nunn said. "But from here this season becomes a whirlwind, so I'm thankful that we've had plenty of time to get back to the basics and really prepare."
The Golden Eagles will send out Friend Chompitakdacha (making her collegiate debut), as well as Valentina Haupt, Miranda Holt, Valerie Pichardo and Henriette Syr.Â
The Golden Eagles had two top-five finishes last fall at the USA Intercollegiate and FIU Pat Bradley, going up against national powers throughout the five tournaments.Â
Participating teams this week include No. 46 Houston (host), No. 35 Baylor, No. 23 Clemson, Kansas State, No. 10 Kent State, Memphis, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, No. 29 Purdue, No. 49 SMU, No. 21 TCU, Texas A&M, Texas State, Texas Tech and UTSA.
