The Golden Eagles move to 8-5 on the season
OXFORD, Ala. – Southern Miss (8-5) split Sunday's twin bill with Jacksonville State (7-4). The Golden Eagles dropped the first game by a final score of 5-4 but bounced back to win the second game, 10-4.
Â
The biggest takeaway of the day was the performance of the Southern Miss freshmen. Finding themselves in critical situations throughout the day, the young Golden Eagles answered time and time again.
Â
Kaitlyn Passeau was the first freshman to find herself in a big time spot after being called upon to pinch hit in the top of the second inning of game one with two outs and runners on second and third. Passeau delivered though by driving a ball to left field for the first hit of her Southern Miss career, scoring both Lacey Sumerlin and Tata Davis to tie the game 2-2.
Â
Davis, the sophomore third baseman, also provided the Golden Eagles with a piece of timely hitting in game one. With Southern Miss down to its last out of the game, Davis blasted a screaming double down the left field line which allowed Beth Taylor and Destini Brown to score, giving the Golden Eagles a 4-3 lead.
Â
Despite Davis' go-ahead two-run single in the top of the seventh inning, Jacksonville State stormed back to win the game in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the seventh inning courtesy of a two-run double from the bat of Taylor Beshears.
Â
The Golden Eagles quickly flushed the game one loss and bounced back, showing a lot of resiliency in game two.
Â
True freshman pitcher Kaylan Ladner earned the start in the circle for Southern Miss in game two and she continued to do what she has done all season long, miss a lot of bats and pitch her way out of jam after jam.
Â
Ladner tossed a total of 3.0 innings in the game before giving way to fellow freshman Makenna Pierce in the bottom of the fourth inning. Ladner allowed six hits, two runs (both earned) struck out five and did not walk a single batter.
Â
With Jacksonville State leading 1-0 in the top of the third inning, Southern Miss freshman outfielder Caroline Casey who has been tasked with filling the right field position in place of the injured Kaley Fruge, stepped up for the Golden Eagles once again on Sunday by notching the first hit of the Southern Miss career.
With one out in the inning, Casey roped a single up the middle and then scored from first base one batter later when freshman leadoff hitter Madison Rayner belted a double to right center, tying the game 1-1.
Â
Senior first baseman Sarah Van Schaik put the Golden Eagles on top 3-1 in the top of the third inning with a two-run triple to center field, scoring Brown and Chase Nelson.
Â
After Van Schaik's third inning triple, Southern Miss never looked back and instead, put the pedal to the metal on offense, scoring seven more runs before it was all said and done.
Â
Redshirt sophomore outfielder Amber Pack who was given the opportunity to pinch hit in the top of the fifth inning, pounded a two-run single up the middle for her first hit of the season. Sumerlin and Taylor scored on the single, extending Southern Miss' lead, 7-2.
Â
Sumerlin, Davis and Samantha Papp also helped to push runs across the plate for the Golden Eagles in game two.
Â
Sumerlin singled up the middle in the top of the fifth inning which allowed Brown to cross the plate. The junior shortstop then drew a bases loaded walk in the top of the sixth inning.
Â
Davis stroked a single through the left side in the top of the sixth inning to score Nelson and Papp followed with a fielder's choice, scoring Van Schaik.
Â
After relieving Ladner in the top of the fourth inning, Pierce went on to throw 3.1 innings in the contest. The Daphne, Ala. native surrendered five hits, two runs (both earned), walked two, struck out three and earned her second win of the season in her first collegiate appearance in her home state.
Â
Junior right-hander Bailie Springfield also got in on the pitching action for Southern Miss as she sealed the deal for the Golden Eagles in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Â
Springfield entered the game and inherited a bases loaded jam which she pitched her way out of without any damage.
Â
Southern Miss will return to action on Wednesday, February 27 when they host SWAC opponent Southern University (2-11) at 6:00 p.m. (CT) at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
