
Southern Miss Softball Shuts Out Southern University, 11-0 in Wednesday Night Contest

The Golden Eagles remain undefeated on their home turf in 2019.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss Golden Eagles (9-5) shut out the Southern University Jaguars (2-12), 11-0 in five innings on Wednesday night in Hattiesburg, Miss.

After the Wednesday night victory, Southern Miss now holds an all-time record of 6-0 against Southern University.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Sarah Van Schaik ripped a two-out single up the middle, scoring Chase Nelson from third base.
Â
Southern Miss tacked on another run in the bottom of the second inning after Kaitlyn Passeau grounded out to first base, which allowed Destini Brown to score from third base.

Brown added a pair of runs to the scoreboard for the Golden Eagles in the bottom of the third inning via a two-run home run that traveled well over the center field wall, making the score 4-0 in favor of Southern Miss.

The third inning home run, marked the second of the season for the sophomore center fielder. Â

Leading 4-0 entering the bottom of the fourth inning, the Golden Eagles turned up the offense, producing seven additional runs.

Caroline Casey was the first Golden Eagle to cross the plate in the inning after being batted in on a single through the right side from the bat of Madison Rayner.

Karley Nichols became the second Golden Eagle to score in the inning, after scoring on a fielding error by Southern University left fielder Paytin Mercado.

Another single up the middle by Van Schaik brought in two more runs for Southern Miss as both Rayner and Nelson scored.

A double by Tata Davis then scored Beth Taylor from second base. Taylor entered the game as a pinch runner for Lacey Sumerlin earlier in the inning.

Heather Hill rounded out the scoring for the Golden Eagles with a two-run single that plated Van Schaik and Davis.

In addition to the high powered offense, Southern Miss also benefited from a stellar start in the circle by Bailie Springfield which ultimately resulted in a complete game (five innings) shutout for the junior right-hander.

For Springfield, her complete game shutout on Wednesday night marked the first of her Southern Miss career.

Southern Miss will return to action on Friday, March 1 when they take on Saint Francis at 11:00 a.m. (CT) and #6 Alabama at 6:00 p.m. (CT) in day one of the Easton Crimson Classic hosted by Alabama. Â
