HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team returns to Starkville for the first time in 10 seasons when they take on nationally ranked Mississippi State in a three-game weekend set at Dudy Noble Field/Polk-Dement Stadium.
Game times for the three single contests are 2 p.m., for Friday, at 2 p.m., Saturday, and 1 p.m., for the series finale Sunday. All three games can be heard on the Southern Miss Sports Network from Learfield IMG College as well as be seen via the internet on the SEC Network+ package.
The two teams have met six times over the last two seasons with the Golden Eagles winning four times during that stretch.
Southern Miss captured a 7-5 victory at Trustmark Park to start this stretch in 2017, before falling to the Bulldogs 8-1 and 8-6 in the NCAA Hattiesburg Regional final later in the year. The two teams then opened last season at Pete Taylor Park with Southern Miss outscoring the visitors 23-6 in a three-game sweep. The Bulldogs made a late-season run that helped them reach the College World Series and finished with a 39-29 record. This season, they are guided by first-year coach Chris Lemonis and are off to a 4-0 start with three wins over Youngstown State and a midweek triumph over UAB.
The Golden Eagles have won six of the last 10 meetings between the schools and this weekend's series marks the first visit for the program to Starkville, since a 7-6 setback to MSU on April 8, 2009.
In starting their 2019 season, the Golden Eagles opened their fifth-straight season with a three-game sweep of its opponent - Purdue - at Pete Taylor Park. The Golden Eagles outscored the Boilermakers 27-15 during the weekend, including 20-4 from the sixth inning and later in the set.
The two teams opened the year with an extra-inning affair, but the Golden Eagles rallied with solo runs in the eighth and ninth innings, before Matt Guidry delivered the game-winning single - the first game-winner of his career – in the 10th as the Golden Eagles enjoyed their 12th walk-off win since the start of the 2017 campaign. In the middle contest, Stevie Powers retired the last 11 batters he faced and Golden Eagle pitching retired 19 of the final 20 Boilermaker batters. In the finale, the Golden Eagles scored in only three innings, but produced their season-high output of runs, including a seven-run eighth to put the game out of reach.
Senior first baseman Hunter Slater led the way offensively for Southern Miss against the Boilermakers with three-straight multi-hit contests and leads the squad with a .615 batting average to go along with a home run and four RBI. All-American Matt Wallner holds a .417 batting mark with a homer and 5 RBI through the first weekend of play.
The Golden Eagles continue their stretch of playing nine of their first 10 games against NCAA Tournament teams from a season ago when they meet the Bulldogs. Along with Purdue and MSU, the squad plays Gonzaga at home next weekend. Southern Miss was also supposed to play Troy in Pearl, Wednesday, but that game was rained out.
Southern Miss returns to action when they play host to New Orleans next Tuesday night.
