HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss men's golf team shot a strong second round Monday with a team score of 286 to place 13th after the first day of the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate being played at the Robert Trent Jones course at Magnolia Grove in Mobile, Ala.
The Golden Eagles fired a 301 in the opening round, but followed with a strong two-under 286 which tied for the fifth lowest team round of the season.
"The weather was a bit of a challenge today," said Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher. "During the first round, we fought against the elements and unfortunately we did not produce our best play.
"After having a rough first round, it was great to see our guys bounce back and post an under par round. It is never easy to dig deep and produce when things are not going your way. But our team is filled with tough players and they never give up. I am proud of their fight and look forward to finishing up strong tomorrow."
Freshman Joey Kirkland (West Monroe, La.) led the way for the Golden Eagles shooting a two-rounds score of 143, including a team-low round of 70 to complete his day and tie for 24th-place.
Junior Walker Kesterson (Hartsburg, Mo.) added rounds of 72 and 73 for a 145 and a 35th-place tie, while junior Matt Lorenz (Gulf Shores, Ala.) added a 78 and 71 for a 149 and a 55th-place tie.
Sophomore Brian Richards (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) sits in a 62nd-place tie after posting scores of 79 and 72 for a 151, while sophomore Hunter Atkins (West Point, Miss.) added scores of 78 and 74 for a 152 to tie for 65th place.
Florida State leads the team standings by firing a minus-23 553 to lead Louisville by five strokes.
The teams play the final 18 holes of the tournament Tuesday with an 8 a.m., shotgun start. Fans can follow the action live here.
