HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Louisiana Tech opened the second half on a 13-0 run over the first 4:15 and finished with an 80-49 victory over Southern Miss on Monday night in each team's C-USA opener.
"First of all, LA Tech has a good team," head coach Jay Ladner said. "I thought they did a good job of taking away our perimeter players. You could say we just had a bad shooting night, but LA Tech had a lot to do with it. Early in the game, I thought we were off to a good start by forcing some turnovers and getting some offensive opportunities. It should have been 12-2 or so, but instead it was 6-2. We just struggled to finish on the other end, even off steals."
The Bulldogs (10-4, 1-0 C-USA) entered the night No. 21 nationally in field-goal defense at 37.8 percent and held the Golden Eagles to 34.5. That aspect ruled the early evening as LA Tech led 11-10 at the 7:10 media timeout, which came after Southern Miss led 6-2 in the first three minutes.
"We needed LA Tech to score in the low-60s to give ourselves a chance to win that game," Ladner said. "At halftime, we trailed 31-24 and had them in a good spot. We had an opportunity to do something in the second half and gave up a 13-0 run that obviously broke the game open. The disappointing thing was that they were all layups. We get to play them again Saturday, and I like that, but it'll be tough."
Tyler Stevenson led the squad with 12 points and six rebounds, the fourth time this year he has been the team's leading scorer.
Southern Miss (4-10, 0-1 C-USA) will see LA Tech again in Ruston on Saturday at 4 p.m. CT.
NOTABLE
-Artur Konontsuk and Boban Jacdonmi made their returns following injuries sustained against North Florida (Dec. 14) and Alabama (Nov. 29), respectively.
-Southern Miss had won the previous two home meetings with LA Tech.
