RUSTON, La. -- LA Tech scored the final 11 points of the first half and added another 11-0 run with seven minutes left to defeat Southern Miss, 78-50, on Saturday evening.
"With two minutes left in the first half, we were right there and I thought we were playing well," head coach Jay Ladner said. "They went on their run before the half and broke our back. We have a problem handling adversity, and when teams get a run on us we have to respond. I have to do a better job at cultivating that kind of mentality with being tougher and playing each possession tougher and smarter."
Southern Miss had gotten within 51-40 at 11:05 before the Bulldogs began building their final run. It was also just a three-point deficit late in the first half (27-24 at 3:18) that preceded the initial big burst by the home team.
Tyler Stevenson (14 points, 11 rebounds) picked up his first-career double-double, and Gabe Watson had a team-high 18 points.
"I thought for a while we had some good things, but we have struggled to find consistency," Ladner said. "We will work hard and try to get ready for these next games."
The Golden Eagles (4-11, 0-2 C-USA) will take on UTEP at 8 p.m. CT on Thursday.
NOTABLE
-Stevenson's double-double also marked the sixth Golden Eagle double-double of the year (Harper-Baker 3, Watson and Jacdonmi 1).
-The Bulldogs (11-3, 2-0 C-USA) were 8-1 at home in league play last year.
