12/3/2019 1:38:00 PM | Men's Basketball
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Home from the Bahamas, the Southern Miss men's basketball team is ready to return to the friendly confines of Reed Green Coliseum for a Wednesday night clash against Tulane. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
The Lady Eagles will also host the Green Wave at 5 p.m., so the nightcap will start 35 minutes upon its completion.
There are numerous fan promotions for the doubleheader. The first 100 students will receive cookies, while the first 500 will also receive a hot dog voucher. Another student opportunity is a $10,000 shootout for one lucky contestant. All fans who have a ticket purchased to one of the games will gain access to the other one as well.Â
Those unable to make it to the Coliseum may stream the game via CUSA.tv or catch John Cox's radio call on the Southern Miss Learfield IMG Sports Network (Rock 104.5 in Hattiesburg/Laurel), as well as the Gameday app.
Game Notes
–    This is the 80th all-time meeting between the schools, the most by anyone on the Southern Miss schedule (besting the 78 meetings with Louisiana Tech). It's the first matchup since December 10, 2016, when the Golden Eagles fell behind by 21 with nine minutes to play before a 71-64 defeat. Kevin Holland went 5-for-5 from deep with eight assists in that one (more on pg. 4).
–    Southern Miss is coming off a daunting trip to the Battle 4 Atlantis, where it squared off against No. 7 Gonzaga, No. 13 Seton Hall and Alabama in consecutive nights. While the Golden Eagles went winless, the young squad saw several notable individual accomplishments that could shape future confidence for the season.
–    LaDavius Draine, the defending C-USA Sixth Man of the Year and Southern Miss single-season three-point record-holder (46.4 percent), had back-to-back double-digit scoring games to begin the Bahamas trip, also marking his first two of the year. He went 9-for-16 from beyond the arc in those two games after entering the tournament 6-for-26 (23.1 percent). Freshman Artur Konontsuk also had a career-high 19 points, with 15 coming in the first half against Gonzaga. He had 10-plus for the first three games of the season as well.
–    Walk-on David McCoy had played nine overall minutes and did not travel to the first three road games before seeing an expanded role in the Bahamas, averaging 12.7 minutes in primarily a defensive role. He not only gave Gabe Watson and Jay Malone rest, but played substantial defense against Seton Hall preseason All-American Myles Powell and Alabama's guard-heavy offense.
–    Tyler Stevenson made his first-career start against No. 7 Gonzaga on Wednesday and then upped his minutes each game of the Battle 4 Atlantis. It culminated with back-to-back, double-figure scoring games against Seton Hall and Alabama, as well as a career-high seven rebounds against the Tide.
–   Southern Miss entered the vaunted Battle 4 Atlantis with a 19-for-79 three-point clip on the season (24.1 percent), before going 19-for-38 against the Zags and Pirates. Jay Malone, who transferred from SW Mississippi CC this year, has started the past three games with Watson shifting to a more shooting-specific role. Since then, Watson has shot 26-for-41 from the field (63.4 percent) and 8-for-13 from deep (61.5 percent).
–   This game can very easily be decided at the free-throw line. The Green Wave average 9.6 more free-throw tries per game than their opponents, while Southern Miss has a minus-9.6 tally. The Golden Eagles have been held to seven or less attempts in four games, but did break through for 20 against Alabama. Contrary to the norm, it has been starting center Boban Jacdonmi who has posted the best shooting from the charity stripe, leading the team in makes (13) and percentage (72.2).Â
–   Tulane is an entirely different team from its 4-27 squad a year ago and has also earned a vote in the most recent coaches' poll. Ron Hunter is in his first season leading the Green Wave following highly-successful stints at IUPUI and Georgia State. Seven players on the squad are Division I transfers, ranging from Kansas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Georgia, Rhode Island, Seton Hall and Norfolk State. Four of those are starters.
–   One of the largests tests on the Golden Eagles' youth will be protecting the rock against Tulane, who ranks No. 11 nationally in forcing 19 turnovers per game. Southern Miss performed well on the flip side of that stat its last game, forcing 15 turnovers against Alabama (most against a Division I team this year). The Golden Eagles will look to thrive off an excitable home-court advantage; they are one of two schools (UTSA) in C-USA to play just two road games in November.
