WBB Hits the Road to Take On Houston

The Lady Eagles play the Cougars at 11 a.m. Thursday for Houston's Education Day game.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Lady Eagles of Southern Miss women's basketball hit the road for just the third time this season to take on Houston on Thursday, Dec. 19 at 11 a.m.
Southern Miss, 7-2, will take on the Cougars, 5-6, in Fertitta Center for Houston's Education Day game. It will be the last game the Lady Eagles play before Christmas. USM is 3-9 when playing the Cougars on their home court, but look to add another tick to the win column on Thursday. Houston leads the series 14-11. It will be the 26th time the two have played. This will be the first Thursday game of the season for the Lady Eagles and just the third on the road - they are currently 1-1 when not in the Green House this season.
The Lady Eagles come off a 62-55 win against South Alabama to take on the Cougars. Southern Miss put up 52 boards against the Jaguars, the first time they have done so since the 2018-19 season against William Carey. Both the Jaguars and the Lady Eagles came into Reed Green having just played Tulane. Southern Miss fell to the Green Wave, while South Alabama came away with the win. Southern Miss gained revenge over the defeat from Tulane, as well as redeemed themselves for the previous meeting against the Jaguars where they fell 68-77 on the road. They were led by senior Respect Leaphart who crushed her previous career-high in points with a 26-point performance. Shonte Hailes also had a good night, dishing out seven assists. Both Daishai Almond and Kelsey Jones had nine boards. For the season, the Lady Eagles are led by senior Shonte Hailes in points with 145, redshirt sophomore Kelsey Jones in rebounds with 51, and sophomore Daishai Almond in assists with 32. Southern Miss is ranked in the top-50 in the NCAA in steals per game in 46th, 3-point field goal defense in 49th and turnovers forced in 33rd.Â
Houston is coming off a 72-43 loss to the No. 5 ranked Texas A&M team. They are led by junior Julia Blackshell-Fair and senior Dorian Branch for the season, with Blackshell-Fair leading in rebounds with 69 and assists with 37. Branch leads the Cougars in points with 136. Head Coach Ronald Hughey is in his sixth season in Houston. They have one Mississippian on their roster in junior Maya Jones who is from Flowood, Miss.Â
