Lady Eagles Start Season 1-0 After Defeat of William Carey

Southern Miss women's basketball starts the 2019-20 season with a 30-point win over William Carey.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss women's basketball team defeated crosstown foe William Carey on Tuesday afternoon in front of the Education Day crowd, starting their season 1-0 after a 77-47 win against the Crusaders.
The Lady Eagles routed the Lady Crusaders by 30 points with senior Alarie Mayze leading the team with 15 points. Southern Miss started strong in the first quarter, outscoring WCU 15-to-9 with 12 points in the paint and eight off of fast breaks. Mayze, along with fellow seniors Shonte Hailes and Respect Leaphart, paced the Lady Eagle offense with their combined 38 points.
This is the 15th straight win against the Lady Crusaders and the 11th for Coach McNelis. It was the 28th time that the Lady Eagles had their season opener also be a home opener, and it was the seventh home opener against William Carey. The Lady Eagles are now 16-1 when playing against their neighbors.
Southern Miss capitalized off the Lady Crusaders' turnovers, scoring 30 of their points in that category. The Lady Eagles scored 20 points off of fast breaks and 52 of their points were in the paint. All but three of Southern Miss' players recorded a steal, with sophomore Daishai Almond leading the team with five, followed by Hailes with four. The Lady Eagles recorded 20 steals overall in comparison to the Crusaders' eight.
Newcomers Jalise Smallwood and Liz Gibbs both saw playing time and came away with their first points as Lady Eagles. Gibbs had five points while Smallwood collected four with an assist, a steal and four rebounds.
For Education Day, the Lady Eagles welcomed sixteen total schools to Reed Green Coliseum. The seats saw the likes of Benndale Elementary, L.T. Taylor Elementary, Laurel Upper Elementary, Lilly Burney Elementary, Lyman Elementary, Moselle Elementary, Oak Grove High School, Oak Grove Lower Elementary, Hopewell Elementary, Quitman Lower Elementary, Standing Pine Elementary, Sumrall High School, Hawkins Elementary, Rowan Elementary, Sacred Heart Elementary, and West Wortham Middle School. The total attendance for the 11 a.m. matchup was 2,163.
