Lady Eagles Take Game 1 of Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic against Mississippi Valley State

Southern Miss will take on VCU on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. in Reed Green Coliseum.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Lady Eagles of Southern Miss women's basketball came away with the win against Mississippi Valley State in game one of the Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic, 84-80.
The Lady Eagles, 5-1, defeated the Devilettes, 0-5, in a close-fought battle to kick off the 2019 Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic in Reed Green Coliseum.
Southern Miss was led by senior Shonte Hailes, who scored her 1,000th career point in the second minute of the game. Hailes scored 30 points against the Devilettes, going 11-of-19 from the floor, 3-of-7 from the 3-point line, and 5-of-7 from the charity stripe. She also collected six assists, and one steal in her 38 minutes on the floor. Alongside Hailes were Respect Leaphart with 21 points, eight rebounds, and three steals. Alarie Mayze had 10 boards, and Daishai Almond finished with 10 points and 11 steals.
The Lady Eagles started the game out hot with 21 points and holding MVSU to just 12. The Devilettes found their stride in the second quarter, outscoring Southern Miss 20 to 13, and continued that stride through the third as they matched the Lady Eagles' 21 points. It seemed the Lady Eagles were pulling away with the win in the fourth, pulling ahead by as much as 10 points two separate times. The Devilettes pushed back on Southern Miss with 38 seconds left on the clock, cutting into their lead and whittling it down to just four points when the final buzzer sounded thanks to two 3-pointers from both Ayonna Cotten and Erin Smith. The Lady Eagles were fouled 10 times in the fourth quarter, allowing Southern Miss to bring in 14 points, with six of the fouls coming in the final two minutes of the game.
Southern Miss not only out-scored Mississippi Valley, they out-stole, out-rebounded, out-assisted, and out-blocked the Devilettes.
The Lady Eagles are now 19-2 against the Devilettes of Mississippi Valley State and extend their winning streak to 15. Southern Miss has also now played Mississippi Valley State seven times in the Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic.
VCU vs. Omaha
The Rams and Mavericks continued the Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic in game two of the tournament, with VCU coming away victorious, 74-66. Danielle Hammond was the leading scorer for VCU with 22 points to her name. Three Rams scored in double-digits. VCU improves to 3-3 on the season, with Omaha falling to 2-5.

The Lady Eagles will close out both the Classic and the month of November against the Rams for game four of the tournament at 4 p.m. in Reed Green Coliseum after the conclusion of the game between Mississippi Valley State and Omaha at 2 p.m. Fans can follow along with the game by listening to Jason Baker, the Voice of the Lady Eagles, along with the legendary Kay James on the Southern Miss Sports Network by Learfield IMG College on 92.7 the Score.
