Guillemaud and Lawler Stay Hot in Loss to South Alabama

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -Â Despite solid performances from freshman Liana Guillemaud and junior Madison Lawler, the Southern Miss (1-16, 0-3 C-USA) women's volleyball team fell in straight sets (22-25, 16-25, 16-25) to South Alabama (12-6, 3-1 Sun Belt) at Reed Green Coliseum.

Guillemaud, who smacked six kills in the first set, delivered a massive attack to tie the match at 20 after South Alabama held the lead for the early portion of the set. A South Alabama attack error would then give Southern Miss the lead three plays later. However, the Jaguars would respond with a 4-0 run to close out the set with a 25-22 win. Fellow freshmen Hallie Phelan had a productive first set as well, tallying three kills and one block.Â

Leading by as many as four points in the second set, the Golden Eagles were able to gather an early lead and hold off a South Alabama run early in the set. The Jaguars, though, utilized a 16-2 run to build a 10-point lead en route to a 25-16 win. Guillemaud added another three kills in the set, while Kaile Tuisamatatele also added three kills. In the third set, Southern Miss was able to force a tie on three occasions, but South Alabama held off a pair of Golden Eagle runs. Ultimately, the Jaguars when the matches final set, 25-16.Â

Guillemaud finished with a team-high 11 kills to go along with two service aces and three digs. Phelan, who was playing her first home game for the Black and Gold, finished with five kills and two blocks. Junior setter Piper Matsumoto added 26 assists and six digs. Leading the charge defensively was Madison Lawler, who had 17 digs, while Kellie Garraway added 14 of her own. Tuisamatatele finished with a career-high seven kills on 20 attack attempts. With five kills, freshman Gillian Hidalgo extended her kill total to a team-best 103.

Next Up
Southern Miss will head to Texas for a pair of C-USA matches this weekend. The Golden Eagles will battle No. 21 Rice on Friday and then head to North Texas for a Sunday matinee in Denton. Â
