Women's Volleyball Travels to Charlotte for Sunday Match

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - With Friday's five-set thriller in the past, the Southern Miss women's volleyball team will head to Charlotte for a Sunday matinee. The Golden Eagles and 49ers will get the Conference USA battle started at 12 p.m. (CT).

The Last Time Out

After taking a one-set lead on Friday night, UTSA managed to win the fourth and fifth sets at Reed Green Coliseum. Backed by impressive performances from its freshmen class, Southern Miss saw their rookies combine for 40 kills, 13 digs, and seven blocks. The group was led by Liana Guillemaud's 13 kills and two blocks. Fellow freshmen Gillian Hidalgo, Kess Krutsinger, and Hallie Phelan each for nine kills. Krutsinger went for four blocks at the net, tying a career-high she set earlier this season.

Junior libero Madison Lawler dished out a career-best 33 digs while junior setter Piper Matsumoto tied her career-high with 45 assists and 14 digs. Matsumoto's performance led to her seventh double-double this season. Kaile Tuisamatatele and Ashley Chapman combined for 13 kills on 30 attempts. Kellie Garraway added a career-high 20 digs.

Scouting Charlotte

The 49ers enter Sunday's match on a three-match skid, dropping their record to 11-11. Charlotte fell in five sets to FIU before dropping back-to-back three-setters to FAU and North Texas. A season ago, Southern Miss defeated Charlotte in four sets at Reed Green Coliseum. Junior Sydney Rowan leads Charlotte with a C-USA-best 327 kills. Overall, Charlotte ranks 10^th with a .202 hitting percentage, 11^th in kills per set, 11^th in assists per set, and second in blocks per set.

Freshman Annika Wetterstrom has exploded for 690 assists in her rookie campaign. Defensively, Yumi Garcia leads the NCAA with 524 digs while averaging 6.63 digs per set. Jocelyn Stoner is averaging 1.08 blocks per set, which ranks sixth in C-USA.

All-Time Series

Dating back to 1991, Southern Miss leads the all-time series, 15-9. The Golden Eagles have won the last five meetings dating back to 2015. The last 49ers win came in 2014, a five-set win at home.
