BATON ROUGE, La. - The Southern Miss women's tennis team ended its three-day stay at the ITA Southern Regional with two losses in the second round of the Singles and Doubles Main Draw.
Ebru Zeynep Yazgan fell to Marta Falceto of Mississippi State in straight sets. The Golden Eagle sophomore fell 6-2 in the first set before dropping the second set via a 6-3 decision. The duo of Monique Burton and Katia de la Garza fell in the second round as well. The top-seeded Ole Miss duo of Machalova and Bortles upended the Golden Eagles by an 8-5 score.
With all four Golden Eagles bowing out of the ITA Southern Regional, Southern Miss will now look to the Seminole All-Conference Showdown scheduled for Nov. 8-10.
Quotable from Steve Schram
"It was a good tournament overall. Ebru was able to pull out a pair of tough wins before falling to a tough opponent from Mississippi State. Arina lost a three-set match to the fourth seed of the tournament, the top player from Mississippi State, and after defeating the doubles team from Auburn yesterday. Katy and Monique had another good showing today against the first-seeded doubles team from Ole Miss. The match was tied at five-all before Ole Miss pulled out the last three games. We lost three very crucial games that went to deuce and the deciding game point was won by Ole Miss all three games. Overall, it was a good representation and we are eager to get better each and every day."
