HATTIESBURG, Miss. -Â The Southern Miss (1-19, 0-6 C-USA) women's volleyball team went the distance with UTSA (13-7, 6-1 C-USA) on Friday night before ultimately falling in five sets (22-25, 25-21, 25-21, 15-25, 11-15) inside Reed Green Coliseum.Â
With five different lead changes in the first set, both teams knew they were in for the long haul off the bat. The Roadrunners and Golden Eagles traded points early in the first set, but an attack error from Liana Guillemaud gave UTSA a four-point lead. From there, the Golden Eagles were unable to bounce back and fell 25-22. Freshman Gillian Hidalgo's five kills in the set were the most by any player on the floor at the time.Â
After UTSA jumped to a 7-1 lead in the matches second set, Southern Miss dug deep and climbed out of a big hole. A kill by junior setter Piper Matsumoto set the Golden Eagles on a 14-3 run, their longest of the season. Up by as many as five, Southern Miss utilized five kills from Guillemaud to keep UTSA out of arms reach. A kill by Hallie Phelan sealed a 25-21 win in the second set.Â
The Golden Eagles used another fast start to take an early third-set lead. A kill by freshman Kess Krutsinger put them up by three, then a kill by junior Kaile Tuisamatatele gave Southern Miss a four-point lead. UTSA made a late run to pull within three, but another Krutsinger kill put the Golden Eagles in position for a four-set win. However, UTSA had other ideas. The Roadrunners embarked on an early run in the fourth set, building a 10-point lead. A 5-1 run put Southern Miss within nine, but a Krutsinger service error meant a winner-take-all fifth set.Â
Heading into the side change in the fifth set, the Golden Eagles saw themselves down by five. A string of kills from Guillemaud and Ashley Chapman forced a UTSA timeout with Southern Miss within two points. Out of the timeout, UTSA scored four consecutive points, which put the Golden Eagles down by six. Facing set point, a Roadrunner attack error brought the Golden Eagles within three, but UTSA held on for their 13th win of the season.Â
On the night, Southern Miss' freshmen combined for 40 kills, seven blocks, and 13 digs. The group was led by Guillemaud's 13 kills and Krutsinger's four blocks. Junior libero Madison Lawler dished out a career-high 33 digs and five assists. Matsumoto tied her career-high with 45 assists and 14 digs, while also recording her seventh double-double of the season. Kellie Garraway ended her night with a career-high 20 digs and five assists. Phelan, Krutsinger, and Hidalgo all finished with nine kills.Â
