BATON ROUGE, La. – The Southern Miss women's tennis team continued to play at a high level on Friday at the ITA Southern Regional. Three Golden Eagles will continue their quest to an ITA Championship on Saturday morning.
Katia de la Garza and Monique Burton started the morning with a match for the ages. Down seven games to two, the duo was down to match point. With Auburn serving and holding a commanding 40-15 lead, Burton and de la Garza took control and went on a run. The two wound up coming all the way back before winning the tiebreaker, 8-7(5). The other doubles team of Arina Amaning and Ebru Zeynep Yazgan fell in straight sets to Auburn, 8-1.
In singles play, Ebru Zeynep Yazgan highlighted the group with a thrilling three-set win over Dora Szcgielska from Mississippi State. After dropping the first set in a tiebreaker, the sophomore climbed back with a pair of 6-3 wins. The win moves her to Saturday play in the Main Draw.
Amaning fell to fourth-ranked Magda Adaloglou in three sets. Amaning grabbed a 6-4 win in the first set against Mississippi State product, but then dropped the final two sets. At the same time, de la Garza fell in straight sets to Dalia Ahmed of McNeese State.
The pair of Burton and de la Garza will hit the courts at 9 a.m. Saturday for the second round. Following that, Yazgan will continue singles play.

"I like how we are competing and holding our ground against some very good competition. We had a spectacular comeback in doubles when de la Garza and Burton fought their way back from a 2-7, 15-40 deficit. They ended up winning five straight games and managed to win the tiebreaker against a very good doubles team in Auburn."
