Volleyball Heads to Denton for Rematch Against North Texas

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -Â Two days removed from falling to No. 21 Rice inside Tudor Fieldhouse, the Southern Miss (1-17, 0-4 C-USA) women's volleyball team will make the five-hour trip north to battle North Texas (9-7, 3-1 C-USA) on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Eagles and Mean Green meet nine days after North Texas handed Southern Miss its third C-USA loss of the season. Head coach Stephanie Radecki and her squad will hit the floor at 1 p.m.

The Last Time Out
Playing their first ranked opponent since falling at No. 25 Alabama last season, the Golden Eagles fell in straight sets to No. 21 Rice on Friday night. Freshman Liana Guillemaud continued to standout after posting a team-high 10 kills. Junior setter Piper Matsumoto dished out 26 assists, five digs, and two kills. Kess Krutsinger, Ashley Berry, and Kinsley Hanback all recorded four kills. In total, four Golden Eagles recorded a block at the net, while Krutsinger extended her total to a team-high 32 blocks. Madison Lawler accounted for a game-high 17 digs.Â

Scouting North Texas
Since defeating the Golden Eagles last Friday, the Mean Green upended LA Tech in Ruston, La, on Sunday. They opened C-USA play with a sweep over UAB before falling to No. 22 Rice in straight sets.Â
Valerie Valerian, who went for 21 kills against the Golden Eagles last season, leads the offensive charge for North Texas with 227 kills this season. Her .243 hitting percentage is fourth on a Mean Green team that ranks third in C-USA with a .232 hitting percentage. Kaliegh Skopal's 554 assists put her with the best of the setters in the C-USA ranks, while also averaging 10.46 assists per set. Sarah Haeussler and Alyssa Johnson lead the net attack with 52 blocks and Aleeyah Galdeira's 209 digs lead the Mean Green.

North Texas leads Southern Miss 8-7 in a series that dates back to 1991. North Texas has claimed the last four meetings, including both meetings a season ago. The last Golden Eagle win came in 2017 at Reed Green Coliseum.
In that 2017 contest, former Golden Eagle Sarah Bell dished out an NCAA season-best 75 assists. It was the most assists in a match by any setter since 2015.Â
