Southern Miss Falls at North Texas in Straight Sets

DENTON, Texas - The Southern Miss (1-18, 0-5 C-USA) women's volleyball team fell in straight sets (14-25, 15-25, 18-25) at North Texas (10-7, 4-1 C-USA) on Sunday afternoon. Texas native Ashley Berry posted eight kills in her homecoming and fellow Texan Madison Lawler recorded 12 digs.

The two teams traded points in the first set until they were tied at eight and then North Texas hit a 9-3 run to pull away from the Golden Eagles. The Mean Green then scored the final five points to secure the first set. The Golden Eagles jumped to a 4-1 lead in the second set after freshman Gillian Hidalgo smacked three straight kills. The Mean Green responded with a run of their own to pull ahead before ultimately winning the second set. In total, Hidalgo had five kills in the set.

North Texas jumped on the Golden Eagles early in the final set but Stephanie Radecki's Southern Miss squad responded to tie it back up early on. However, the Mean Green opened a six-point lead, which Southern Miss shortened to only four late in the set. North Texas would eventually hold on to win the final set to move to 10 wins on the season.

Hidalgo finished her day with nine kills. Freshman Kess Krutsinger totaled five kills, four digs, and a block. Setters Piper Matsumoto and Summer Johnson recorded 16 and six assists, respectively. Kellie Garraway added eight digs to go along with Lawler's 12.

The Golden Eagles return home to host C-USA foe UTSA on Friday night at 6 p.m.
