Golden Eagles Return Home to Host Alabama State

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss women's volleyball team hasn't played at Reed Green Coliseum in 25 days, but that all changes on Wednesday night when the Golden Eagles (0-14, 0-2 C-USA) play host to Alabama State (4-15, 1-4 SWAC). The Hornets and Golden Eagles will get the nonconference showdown started at 6 p.m.
The last time out
Southern Miss played the second game of its opening Conference USA road trip on Sunday at (RV) WKU in Bowling Green, Ky. The Golden Eagles fell in straight sets (23-25, 18-25, 17-25), moving the Lady Toppers to an NCAA-leading 15 wins.
Sophomore Kinsley Hanback set a new career-high for kills on Friday night and followed suit with another career-high nine kills against WKU. In the matches first set, the two teams found themselves deadlocked 12 times, which the Lady Toppers ultimately won. Junior Piper Matsumoto dished out 24 assists, seven digs, and five kills. Fellow junior Jacoby Sims smacked six kills and freshman Gillian Hidalgo added eight kills.
Madison Lawler accounted for a game-high 12 digs and Kess Krutsinger swatted a team-high four Lady Topper attacks.
Match notes
Bayle' Bennet leads the offensive charge for the Hornets with 211 kills. The Illinois product is swinging at a .146 hitting clip and averaging 3.15 kills per set. E'laisah Young has a team-high 38 blocks and also has 106 kills.

Southern Miss leads the all-time series, 5-0. Dating back to 1984, the Golden Eagles have outscored the Hornets 15 sets to one. Last season, the Golden Eagles went on the road to Alabama State and earned a 3-1 victory.

- Against Alabama State on Oct. 16, 2018, Sarah Bell became the all-time assists leader in Southern Miss history. The Golden Eagles would win the road contest, 3-1.

The Hornets head to Hattiesburg with a 4-15 record and a 1-4 record in SWAC play. A weekend ago, Alabama State dropped four matches at the SWAC West Roundup. It opened with losses to Texas Southern, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Prairie View A&M, and Southern in Prairie View, Texas. The Hornets ended the weekend with a sweep of Grambling State on Sunday morning.
