HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss sophomore Katia de la Garza was named the Conference USA Female Tennis Athlete of the Week. De la Garza, a Nuevo Leon, Mexico native, concluded her opening weekend without a blemish on her record.
A West Alabama transfer, de la Garza snagged her first win as a Golden Eagle against Aylen Hubeaut of Florida A&M at No. 3 singles. In what ended up being the closest contest of her weekend, de la Garza won 6-3, 6-2. On Saturday, after moving back to No. 4 singles, she stayed hot en route to defeating Jackson State's Lily Zhang. Against Zhang, she dropped just one game, winning 6-1, 6-0. To conclude her weekend, de la Garza dominated Stefany Grlj of Alcorn State, winning 6-0, 6-0.
On the doubles side, de la Garza went 2-0 with Tanit Lopez on court three. Against Florida A&M, the duo secured the doubles point for Southern Miss by beating Sophia Osabuohien and Rachel Harden, 6-1.
