Southern Miss to Finish January Play Against FIU

The Lady Eagles look to finish the month with four wins.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Lady Eagles look to finish out the month of January with another win under their belt against FIU. The two will face off on Thursday night in Reed Green Coliseum, with tip set at 6pm.Â
Southern Miss (11-10, 3-5) is coming off a great road trip to WKU and Marshall, where they upset the undefeated in C-USA Lady Toppers and one-loss in conference Thundering Herd. The Lady Eagles were led by veterans Megan Brown and Respect Leaphart, as well as C-USA's Freshman of the Week Kelsey Jones.Â

The Lady Eagles will be participating in #Play4Kay against the Panthers, sporting pink jerseys. The first 200 fans will also receive a free t-shirt. Fans are encouraged to support the Kay Yow Cancer Fund by donating here.
The Matchup
USM and FIU have met a total of 10 times, with Thursday becoming the 11th game between the two. The Lady Eagles lead the overall series at 7-3, but the Panthers own the series in Reed Green Coliseum, 3-1. Last time out, FIU put up a four-point win against the Lady Eagles, 70-74 in Reed Green.Â
Southern Miss has seen recent success in Conference play, with wins against WKU, Marshall and Charlotte earlier in the month. FIU hasn't had such luck, with their current record overall this season at 3-17 and 0-7 in the Conference. Their three wins came against Florida A&M, Morgan State and Alcorn State. They are currently on a nine-game losing streak, starting since South Alabama on Dec. 21. The Panthers started Conference play with Middle Tennessee in a close one, losing by only six points to the Blue Raiders, 43-49.
Standouts
The Lady Eagles continue to be led by Megan Brown, Kelsey Jones and Shonte Hailes in points, rebounds and assists, respectively. Megan Brown leads the team with 217 points this season, making her career total 937. Aside from her point total, she is at 121 total games played, which ties her with Renee Magee at No. 7 on Southern Miss' all-time career games played list. She has started 85 games in a row which is second in the Conference, only behind UAB's Deanna Kuzmanic who has started 116 consecutive games. Kelsey Jones continues to lead the Conference in field goal percentage, going 70-111 from the field, making her percentage .631. She's up to 114 rebounds, which leads the team. She was named Conference USA's Freshman of the Week on Jan. 28 for her performances against WKU where she had her third double-double, and against Marshall where she and Brown led in rebounds. Hailes has brought her season total assists to 91, making her career total 332. She's tied for No. 12 on Southern Miss' all-time career assists with Angela Atterberry.Â

For the Panthers, Chelsea Guimaraes, a redshirt junior from Portugal, leads the team in points with 203. Ce'Nara Skanes, a freshman from OKC, is leading the team in rebounds with 148. Leading the team in assists is Bre'Osha Scott, a junior from Garland, Texas, with 60.
