MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Lady Eagles fell to Middle Tennessee on the road on Thursday night, 66-49.
Southern Miss (8-8, 0-3) started off strong, winning the tip off against the Blue Raiders and with Alarie Mayze putting up the first four points of the game, but it was a battle the whole way through. The Lady Eagles powered through the second quarter, putting up 21 points to the Blue Raiders' 14 and starting it out with a 17-6 run in the first six plus minutes, cutting the lead to as little as three. It was 38-31 going into the half and the Lady Eagles seemingly got over their third-quarter slump against MTSU, scoring in double-digits in the third quarter for the first time in conference play with 13. The Lady Eagles were within one with just a hair over five minutes left in the third, but a dominate defense from the Blue Raiders kept them from scoring for the remainder of the quarter. A 13-0 run from Middle Tennessee led them to a 14 point lead moving into the fourth quarter. Southern Miss continued to fight even with the Blue Raiders defense breathing down their necks, but they were held to only five points in the final quarter.
Shonte Hailes led the team in assists with six, and her six were matched by A'Queen Hayes of Middle Tennessee. Amber Landing had two blocks, the most of any player in the game. Both Alarie Mayze and Megan Brown finished with double-figure scoring; Mayze with 11 points, Brown with 14. Brown went 2-for-5 from the three point line and was 6-for-10 overall, while Mayze was 3-for-6 from the field and 5-for-7 from the free throw line.
