
Golden Eagles Fall Twice on Day One

Tuscaloosa, Ala. – Southern Miss had an opportunity to pull off arguably the biggest win in program history when it met No. 15 Purdue (9-0, 0-0 Big 10) at the Crimson-White Tournament on Friday morning. After a remarkable battle, the Golden Eagles ultimately fell in five sets (29-27, 24-26, 18-25, 25-23, 19-21) to the Boilermakers. Facing off against South Alabama (6-6, 0-0 SUN BELT) in the nightcap, Southern Miss fell to the Jaguars in three sets (24-26, 18,25, 21-25) after a quick turnaround.

Purdue
Opening up the Crimson-White Tournament against No. 15 Purdue, the Golden Eagles came out firing on all cylinders in the first set. The two teams traded points for a majority of the set, but the Golden Eagles took over after Kylie Grandy delivered a kill to tie the game at 26. From there, a kill by Ashley Berry forced set point and then an attack error by the Boilermakers handed Southern Miss the first set.

Bouncing back like any ranked team does, the Boilermakers took the second set in dramatic fashion. The Golden Eagles were up three points late in the set, but a Purdue surge put the Boilermakers up 23-22. Southern Miss went on to tie the set two more times, but ultimately dropped the final two points.

The first half of the third set went as the first two did, but Purdue flipped a switch late in the set and went on an 8-1 run to secure a third-set win. With Purdue in control heading into the fourth set, Southern Miss needed a push to force a winner-take-all set.

The Golden Eagles trailed early in the fourth frame before embarking on a comeback to keep the match within reach late in the set. A kill by Alexis Coombs tied the match and then a kill by Berry gave the Golden Eagles the lead. Southern Miss would go on to secure the fourth set via a Grandy kill.

The Golden Eagles jumped to a 10-5 lead in the fifth set, but Purdue struck right back. The Boilermakers tied the game at 12 before taking a one-point lead. The Golden Eagles faced match point three times before surrendering the final points.

By games end, Grandy led all players with 26 kills and recorded 12 digs. Sarah Bell finished with 49 assists and 13 digs. Kellie Garraway and Madison Lawler recorded 19 and 22 digs, respectively. At the net, Catherine Repsher, Chandler Marshall and Coombs each recorded three blocks.

South Alabama
With Southern Miss and South Alabama both dropping its morning games, both teams were desperate for a win in the nightcap. The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 9-3 lead, but the Jaguars were able to answer and take a 17-14 lead late in the set. Southern Miss was able to tie the game at 24, but South Alabama went on to score the final two points to take the first set.

South Alabama jumped out to an early lead in the second set and the Golden Eagles were never able to recover. The Jaguars went on to win the second set, 25-18. If Southern Miss wanted to force a fourth set, then they were going to have to steal the third. The two teams traded points for most of the set, but South Alabama utilized a 5-0 run to take a three-point lead. However, Southern Miss recovered to tie the game at 20-20 before the Jaguars went on a 5-1 run to secure the win.

Marshall led the way for the Golden Eagles with 15 kills and a .267 hitting percentage. Bell added 37 assists to go with 11 digs. The Golden Eagles recorded seven kills as a team and Berry had four of those.Â
