
Women's Tennis Defeat C-USA Foe UAB 5-2

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss Women's Tennis team defeated its first Conference USA opponent, UAB, 5-2 on Sunday improving to 17-5 on the season.
Southern Miss jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after courts 2 and 3 secured the doubles point for the second-straight match. Elena Roca and Rikeetha Pereira won 6-3 at No. 2 and Tanit Lopez Lopez and Anastasia Cobanoivc won the tie-breaker at No. 3 for their fifth doubles match of the season.
Roca won her first single match of the week and boasts a 16-0 record. Despite having her last three matches going unfinished, Roca remains the only undefeated Golden Eagle. 15 of her 16 wins have come in straight-set fashion.
The Blazers would cut the lead to 2-1 after Arina Amaning dropped her match at No. 1 with a 7-5, 6-3 finish. Lopez was the only Golden Eagle to go undefeated in singles play this week after a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 win against UAB to make it 3-1 Southern Miss.
Claudia Castella clinched the match at No. 6 with her 7-6, 6-2 finish. Castella posts a two-match win streak after Sunday.
Tjasa Jerse won the last point for the Golden Eagles with her 17th win of the season.
The Golden Eagles finished the week 2-1 after Sunday's match and hold a 8-3 home record.
Southern Miss hosts William Carey April 17th at 2 p.m. for Senior Day.
