Southern Miss Falls to South Alabama in Match Play Finale

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss men's golf team fell to South Alabama 3-2 in the final round of the Southern College Match Play at the Hattiesburg Country Club Saturday afternoon. The Golden Eagles had topped conference foe LA Tech earlier in the day, 3-2, to make it to the finale.
Southern Miss' day got off to an early start at the Country Club's 6,602 yard course with Matt Codd and Nathan Corchis both going 1-up on their Bulldog opponents. Philip Heine added the deciding point to the match by defeating Hayden Fredrick of LA Tech 7-5.
The Golden Eagles would see South Alabama in the closing match for the second year in a row after the Jaguars bested Louisiana 3-2 to begin the day. Heine would again defeat his opponent, this time going 1-up, and Willie Hammond came out of his pairing with a two and one victory. South Alabama evened the scoring by outdoing Codd and Brian Richards and Corchis battled to the final hole, but eventually succumbed two and one for the Jaguar win.
Southern Miss will be back in action April 16-17 at the Old Waverly Country Club in West Point, Miss. for the Old Waverly Collegiate hosted by Mississippi State.
