Hammond Leads Charge for Southern Miss at Old Waverly

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss junior Willie Hammond used a second round of four-under (68) to climb 46 spots up the leaderboard to occupy a seven way tie for 19th on the first day of the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship. The Southlake, Texas product is four-over (148) total after shooting an eight-over (80) in his first round. The Golden Eagles moved two spots up the leaderboard to be positioned 11th (41-over) after the two rounds played today.
Hammond second round score topped his career-best round of 69 that he shot in 2015's opening tournament. The Texas native fired six total birdies today, five of them coming during the second round. His second go around of the Old Waverly's 7,000 yard course included only one blemish on the scorecard.
Nathan Corchis trails Hammond by four strokes at eight-over (152) and tied for 35th. He collected rounds of six-over (78) and two-over (74) during today's opening round, sinking five birdies and 20 pars. The Water Sound, Fla. native was even on the front nine.
Freshman Brian Richards posted two rounds of six-over (78) and is tied for 57th at twelve-over (156). Matt Codd sits in 81st with rounds of six-over (78) and 16-over (88) and Philip Heine is tied for 82nd at 23-over (167) after finishing rounds of 12-over (84) and 11-over (83).
Southern Miss will be paired with Louisiana and LA Tech for tomorrow's final round that will begin with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. Live stats for the tournament can be found at Golfstat.com.
