HATTIESBURG, Miss. â€" The Southern Miss baseball team travels to Norfolk, Va., to take on Old Dominion for a Conference USA series.
The Golden Eagles head into the weekend with a six-game win streak after defeating South Alabama 5-3 on Tuesday night. Luke Reynolds led the team with two hits against the Jaguars and now leads the squad with 53 hits on the season.
Reynolds, Matt Wallner and Hunter Slater have all totaled over 50 hits this season while also driving in 125 runs. The Golden Eagles have outscored its opponents 301-152 after 40 games.
The Golden Eagles pitching staff fanned 35 Blue Raiders in last weekend's home series and earned their first conference sweep of the season. Stevie Powers had a career-high night tossing 12 strikeouts in eight innings improving to 4-1 on the season. Nick Sandlin returned to the mound after missing one rotation and struck out 12 batters in just five innings of work earning him his fourth C-USA pitcher of the week award of the season.
Sandlin will return to the starting lineup for Friday's 5 p.m., contest while Powers returns to the middle game at 2 p.m., and Walker Powell will close the series out on the mound on Sunday 11 a.m.
Southern Miss outscored Middle Tennessee 28-3. Slater hit the fourth grand slam of the season for the Golden Eagles and has now homered eight times.
Southern Miss sits atop of the conference standings with a 13-4 record in league play while the Monarchs sit last with a 5-13 record. Old Dominion is 2-8 in their last 10 games before hosting the Golden Eagles.
Old Dominion will throw left-handed pitcher Luke Krantz to open the weekend series who posts a 6.48 ERA and right-handed pitcher Morgan Maguire with a 3.18 ERA on Saturday. Sunday's pitcher is TBA at this juncture.
