HATTIESBURG, Miss. â€" The Southern Miss baseball team completes a four-game homestand Tuesday when they play host to South Alabama at 6 p.m., at Pete Taylor Park.
The Golden Eagles enter their midweek contest at 28-11, having posted a five-game win streak after earning its first Conference USA sweep last weekend against Middle Tennessee. Southern Miss outscored the Blue Raiders 28-3 and have now won the last 14 match ups between the two sides.
The weekend sweep was also the 10th straight C-USA series win for the Golden Eagles dating back to last season. The three runs allowed in the series was the fewest runs given up since WKU managed only two runs last season in Bowling Green.
The Southern Miss pitching staff gave up only three walks in 27 innings of work this weekend and are currently second in the nation with strikeout-to-walk ratio with a 3.37 average. The pitching staff featured Stevie Powers tossing a career-high 12 strikeouts in the opening game against the Blue Raiders after pitching a complete-game shutout the weekend prior at FIU.
Junior Nick Sandlin made his return to the rotation for game two of the double header where he fanned 12 of the 16 Blue Raiders he faced in five innings. Sandlin won C-USA honors for his work and was also named a Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week for his performance. This is the third time this season Sandlin has won both awards in the same week and the fourth C-USA pitching honor in his junior campaign. Sandlin has tallied 87 strikeouts with only six walks in 54 innings and currently is second in the nation for strikeout per nine innings (14.50) and fifth in ERA with a 1.17.
The Golden Eagles face the Jaguars for the second time this season after dropping a close 10-9 contest in Mobile at Stanky Field. The Jaguars come to The Pete with a 24-14 overall record and Travis Swaggerty leads the squad with a .580 slugging percentage and 10 homeruns.
Left-handed pitcher Adam Jackson will make his first start of the season for the Golden Eagles on Tuesday night. Jackson holds a 4.24 ERA after 17 innings pitched in 12 appearances. Jackson earned his first C-USA win against WKU pitching four innings and allowing only two runs.
South Alabama will counter with left-handed pitcher Ryan Terry. Terry will make his second start and just his seventh appearance of the season against the Golden Eagles with a 10.29 ERA. Terry's tossed seven innings while striking out 11 batters and has given up nine runs.
Southern Miss has defeated South Alabama three-straight games at Pete Taylor Park including last season's 8-3 win during the NCAA Regionals.
