HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss shot 65.7 percent from the field, its fourth-best performance in school history, en route to a 106-46 win over Rust on Sunday afternoon.
"I was really happy about only turning it over three times in the first half. Overall, we shot the ball very well, just like we had done a few times this season," head coach Doc Sadler said. "The three games from North Florida to William Carey, I don't think we could have played any worse. Everybody goes through slumps, and hopefully ours was just through the start of this season.
"It's always good to win. If you look at the scores in college basketball nowadays, you'll see results that you didn't think could happen. And that's college basketball."
Southern Miss (6-2) led 54-18 at the half, going 8-for-17 on three-pointers in that period. For the game, Rust was held to 5-for-27 long-range shooting.
The Golden Eagles defeated Rust 109-62 last season, the only other meeting between the schools.
Dominic Magee led the scoring with 14 points, including 4-for-5 shooting beyond the arc. Tyree Griffin (13), LaDavius Draine (10), Tyler Stevenson (10) and Ladarius Marshall (10) also reached double-figures, the second time this season Southern Miss had five do so.
The Black and Gold now take a finals week hiatus, returning to the floor Tuesday, Dec. 11 versus Millsaps.Â
