HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss women's tennis head coach Steve Schram unveiled the 2019 schedule, marking his first at the helm of the Golden Eagles. Schram comes to Southern Miss after a successful stint at Barry University. Â
Home BreakdownÂ
On January 17, the Golden Eagles kickoff the 2019 season at the Southern Miss Tennis Facility against Grambling State. The following weekend, the Golden Eagles will host Jackson State and Florida A&M before hitting the road for a one-game trip. Southern Miss will return home on February 2 when they host Division II foe West Alabama. Following an eight-match road swing, the Golden Eagles then host Bradley on March 19, a Tuesday afternoon battle. The final home match will be against Southern on April 4.Â
"We have a tough schedule" Schram said. "I'm going to challenge the players to see if they can rise to the occasion. I also think our schedule will prepare us for the Conference USA Championships."
Road Breakdown
In total, the Golden Eagles will play in 14 matches away from the Southern Miss Tennis Facility. Southern Miss will open the road slate against Alcorn State in late January. After returning for one match, the Golden Eagles will hit the road for an eight-match road trip, traveling to William Carey, Alabama State, Troy, South Alabama, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, Incarnate Word, UTSA, and Texas-Rio Grande Valley. In a stretch from February 6 to March 30, the squad will be on the road for 13 of the 15 matches. A trip to Xavier precedes trips to Jackson State and Tulane. The regular season will conclude with a trip to UAB and then LA Tech a week later.Â
The 2019 Conference USA Championships will take place in Houston, Texas, hosted by Rice. The dates for the Championships are April 18-21.Â
"We have two seniors and they fight very hard on the court," Schram said. "They don't give up and I think that's good for the younger players to see. This fall, I think the seniors have passed those traits along to the younger players. I want to see that fight, that refuse to lose attitude on the court from the younger players."
