HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Ten games against opponents in last season's NCAA tournament over the first 11 contests highlights the 2019 Southern Miss baseball schedule released Wednesday by coach Scott Berry.
The Golden Eagles, which finished 44-18 a season ago as the Conference USA regular season and tournament champions, enjoys another difficult slate which includes 30 home games and contests against six different schools - 15 games total - that made the NCAA Tournament a season ago.
The opening season stretch includes Big 10 member Purdue, an NCAA participant a season ago, to begin the season in a three-game set at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field, Feb. 15-17. After a midweek trip to face another postseason squad from a year ago, Troy, at Trustmark Park in Pearl (Feb. 20), the Golden Eagles travel to College World Series participant Mississippi State (Feb. 22-24) for a three-game series.
Southern Miss then entertains New Orleans for a single contest, Feb. 26, before finishing its tough stretch by welcoming 2018 West Coast Conference tournament champion Gonzaga to The Pete for the first time, March 1-3.
Other non-conference home tilts for the Golden Eagles include Southern (Mar. 5), Holy Cross (Mar. 8-10), ULM (Mar. 19), South Alabama (Apr. 2), Louisiana-Lafayette (Apr. 23) and 2018 NCAA participant Ole Miss (May 1).
The Golden Eagles also welcome Conference USA schools Old Dominion (Mar. 22-24), Marshall (Apr. 5-7), Charlotte (Apr. 18-20), NCAA participant Florida Atlantic (May 3-5) and UAB (May 16-18) to The Pete this spring.
Southern Miss takes to the road for non-conference affairs at Louisiana-Lafayette (Mar. 13), Nicholls State at Zephyr Field in Metairie, La., (Mar. 26), Ole Miss at Trustmark Park (Apr. 9), South Alabama (Apr. 16) and New Orleans (Apr. 24).
The squad also travels to league foes Louisiana Tech (Mar. 15-17), UTSA (Mar. 29-31), FIU (Apr. 12-14), Middle Tennessee (Apr. 26-28) and Rice (May 10-12).
The top eight teams from the C-USA regular season will then meet at MGM Park, May 22-26, for the league's baseball championship tournament. It will be the third-straight year that that venue has played host to the event.
