HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Lady Eagles fell short in a hard fought game against Sam Houston State in the final game of the 31st Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic, 65-61.
The Lady Eagles (4-2) started the game with a 15-9 lead on the Bearkats of Sam Houston State (3-3) after the first quarter, thanks to accuracy from the foul line. The Bearkats didn't have an official field goal attempt until there were just under five minutes left on the clock in the first period.
From the second quarter on, the Lady Eagles and Bearkats continued to stay neck and neck. Southern Miss was able to shut down the offense of SHSU in the second quarter, but free throws from the Bearkats allowed them to continue to keep the game tied. A 3-pointer from Megan Brown started an eight point run for USM, with the icing on the cake coming from Shonte Hailes, who ended the half by draining a 3-point shot just before the buzzer.
The Lady Eagles kept the lead alive and pulled ahead to as much as a 13-point lead on the Bearkats. Sam Houston State was able to nip at the Southern Miss lead, but USM went into the final quarter with a seven-point advantage.
In the final quarter, the Lady Eagles tied the Bearkats repeatedly until a six-point run from SHSU put Southern Miss behind at 63-58 with a little over a minute to play. The Lady Eagles were not about to give up, and with just five seconds left on the clock, Southern Miss was able to cut into the Bearkats' lead and bring the score to 63-61, but a pair of free throws for SHSU sealed the deal.
