NORFOLK, Va. – The Southern Miss Golden Eagles (13-5-1, 5-4-1 C-USA) defeated the FAU Owls (12-8-1, 8-1-1 C-USA) 1-0 in the semifinal round of the 2018 Air Force Reserve Women's Soccer Championship on Friday night in Norfolk, Va.
With their win against FAU, Southern Miss punched their ticket to the tournament championship match for the first time in school history.
The Golden Eagles also registered their 13th win of the season, setting a new single-season program record.
Southern Miss will face the winner of the semifinal match between No. 1 seed North Texas and No. 4 Louisiana Tech on Sunday, November 4 at 11:00 a.m. (ET)/10:00 a.m. (CT). The match will be played at the Old Dominion Soccer Complex in Norfolk, Va.
After falling to FAU 2-0 in a regular season road match in Boca Raton, the Southern Miss Golden Eagles made adjustments and got their redemption when it mattered most.
The match was a tough battle between both teams until the clock hit 0:00.
Despite being outshot by FAU 16-5, it was Southern Miss senior midfielder Stephanie Garcia who made her shot count in the semifinal match.
Garcia took the Golden Eagles' lone corner kick of the afternoon and found the back of the net on a beautiful curl, giving the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead just before the end of the first half.
Garcia's goal at the 41:28 mark in the first half was her fifth of the 2018 season. She now ranks second on the team in goals scored.
Southern Miss' stout defense rose to the occasion as they have done so many times this season with their backs against the wall and held FAU's talented offense in check. The Golden Eagles' backline notched their 11th shutout of the season, besting their own single-season school record.
Not to be overshadowed was the spectacular goalkeeping of Southern Miss sophomore goalkeeper Kendell Mindnich, who earned her seventh shutout of the season.
After recording her seventh shutout of the season on Friday night, Mindnich now ranks as Southern Miss' all-time single-season individual shutouts leader. The sophomore broke the previous school record of six single-season individual shutouts set by Anna Snyder in 2003.
Mindnich also finished the match with four saves.
The Golden Eagles will celebrate the program's first-ever C-USA Tournament semifinal victory but will soon be back to work as they prepare for the tournament championship match on Sunday.
